Friday 10-8-10 Lake Waikaremoana, and Hut Marauiti, Day 1

We woke up to a cold windy morning but it was totally clear and beautiful.  We packed the rest of our bags while drinking coffee and trying to scarf down the remainder of our chilly bin, said goodbye to our new Swiss friends and headed to the motor camp to park the car and catch the motor taxi to the trail head.  Our captain was a Captain Ron twin minus the eye patch… no shoes, long hair with a beanie and wearing a robe, "The Dude" would be proud.  He took us out across the lake and as we further into the inlet where the trail head was we got out of the wind, it was perfect weather low 20's C and no wind, perfect for tramping.
The tramp was beautiful through old growth NZ bush with fern trees, ferns, palms and all kinds of crazy tropical looking plants.  All of the river crossings were these flimsy suspension bridges that were made tough with steel cables but swayed like crazy as you walked over.  We made good time to the cabin, it took 4 hours of tramping to get to our hut just in time as to get out of the wind that decided to pick back up.
