11-19-10

Big morning, we were up and moving quickly, we turned on the cell phone just in case they called, we had a message but not from our friends.  The call was from our mechanic, Paul had left his jacket in the back of the loaner car we took to town. Dang! We felt bad about driving 40 min out of the way but we also did not want to buy a new fleece.  When we were packing the van Paul noticed that we were also missing one of our windshield wipers. The mechanic was going to replace them, but did not have the right size so he must have forgotten put it back on. Ugh, at least the airport was close by.
The plane was to arrive at 9:55am, but reader board informed us that it was delayed until 10:50am.  In disbelief we waited and checked the board again, dang delayed until 12:10pm. Well instead of sitting around the airport, we hopped in the van and drove to the mechanic, got Paul's jacked and our windshield wiper, and made it back to the airport with 10min to spare before the flight landed.
We were so excited to see our friends! We needed to start our drive south today so we cut up some cheese and meat and crambed them in our little Serena. I think they were very surprised how tight a fit it was, with six large packs and six adults.  With more weight and an even lower clearance we set out for our next great adventure.  The road was flat and straight through the Canterberry plains, it was a real shocker for Paul and I to cruise at 110kms! We were heading 3 hours into the mountains to Lake Tekapo for the night.
The lake was so beautiful, the blue color was so bright even in the clouds with big peaks half hidden by the clouds, we stopped at the Church of the Good Shepard the oldest stone structure in NZ. Then on to our motor camp. We found a sweet spot big enough for all three tents, showered and went to the kitchen to make some tacos!  In the kitchen a couple from the Netherlands (that is also Holland as we cleared up in conversation) asked how all six of us fit into the Serena, they had watched us come in and having the same van were amazed at our clown car skills.  We talked to them for most of the night, their english was perfect and they told us in school they learn to speak English, French, German as well as their native Dutch, wow sounds like the US education has some catching up to do!   They loved American movies and Mountain Dew, but Mountain Dew was made  illegal in Holland in the last few years, but the guy found it on the chinese black market!  We started to talk about Arnold Schwartznegger and he said his favorite movie of Arnie's was Commando, I was so very happy to hear this!  After our movie talk, they asked us about our van, they paid less for theirs but after two weeks of having it they had $2,500 in repairs!  Dang, at least our transmission was cheaper!  A little more talk on how good In and Out Burger we were all ready for bed after a long day!
